BDR Mutiny- a distant observer Rumi, February 26, 2009 Yesterday went to office like any other regular day around after 10. Got occupied in setting up to do list. Shortly few after, Harun, our accounts executive said something interesting- he said that he saw 2 guys hit by bullets being carried away and there was a trouble going on at the BDR gate. Getting curious we all ran towards the roof top, and saw some thick smoky clouds at the BDR location since Peelkhana was quite close from our office at Road#4. Added to our interest, heavy and rapid gun shots and cannon firing heard quite frequently. Jewel bhai got more curious, and started to making calls to different places to find out what was going on. He got few leads from the start, first was like they’re denying army officers order and as a result they’re in internal fights with the army officers; second source was one of his uncle received a call inside the toilet and said something wrong went on, but couldn’t gave a clear picture what was going on- it means, he actually didn’t know how massive the situation had turned over. Whatever… I thoung it was like anything usual like some distracted and isolated incidents, things will be fixed shortly. Jewel bhai got too much curious and he moved out to see the drama with his own eyes. It was almost 12 past noon. Around 1 PM… all of a sudden situtaion seemed to be tempting, J bhai called me and broadcasted live commenteries right from the source- he was lying on the grassy pond edge just opposite to the BDR gate. He said something’s happening inside BDR and there were 7/8 civil dressed commando trying to enter to the BDR place. Several times he told me to go and withness the thrilling situation along side. However, I wasn’t courageous enough to move out as I heard random gun shots being fired indiscriminately. Things went worse at 1:30PM. Imran bhai rushed with few other friends and told me to close down the office immediately as there might a possible carfew starting from 3PM. I called to J bhai and shared this info- he said, allow those ppl who wants to leave, but they’re cming back for the lunch altogether. Meanwhile, few other office members went to the place to witness the drama. After 10/15 mins later again, Imran bhai came to me again and said, to evacuate the office building at once and army is going to deploy heavy firing machines adjacent to the building. I had no other options to stay, as it’s an emergency situation… finally came back home with 2 stops, one at TSC and the other was at Bangabazar… half the way on foot. Glued my eyes on the TV screen and tried to hit bdnews24.com several times- ufortunately their server was denying to serve any more resources. I don’t know why they are not taking any step to fix this- don’t they know what is a round robin loop mechanism to load balance??? Anyways, that’s different story. Watched horrifying and thrilling TV news till 2 o’ clock. To me, it was like something, that I scare the most, of losing something or someone…. An unseen fear obscured. Woke in the next morning- turned my tv on, situation remains the same even though a general amnesty was declared by Sk. Hasina- the prime minister. The whole day- was a mess! Sometimes, it looked like it was ok and the moment next, it seems everything’s going wrong! I will not continue more, in my later post/s, I’ll try to addup contents from different news local & international agencies report. Finally the bloddy rebellion which started so angrily-ended without bloods. Guess, government, need to be congratulated and my deepest fear implanted now is for the future happenings. This serious incident, definitely divide the army into two- one who would appreciate how it was handled professionally by the government politicians and the other who sympathesize to their dead collegues and would look for a revenge… But like PM said to her speech, “…confrontation breeds confrontation…” May God be with us and bless this country from all evil doers!
