Install Openmediavault On Debian Squeeze

Rumi, May 26, 2013May 26, 2013

Introduction

This guide is for people that have used the Debian Squeeze Standard Installation or Debian Squeeze Gnome Installation guide to install Debian onto their microserver. If you're looking to install OpenMediaVault as a standalone system then see install OpenMediaVault instead.
Prerequisites
Debian Squeeze installed on your microserver

Installation

Configuring The Sources
If you're on Gnome then start the Root Terminal
Type: nano /etc/apt/sources.list to edit your package source file
At the bottom of the file add all of the following:

# Deb Multimedia
deb http://www.deb-multimedia.org squeeze main non-free
deb-src http://www.deb-multimedia.org sid main

# OpenMediaVault
deb http://packages.openmediavault.org/public omnius main

Press CTRL+X to exit

Press Y when prompted if you want to save the modified buffer
Press ENTER on File Name to Write to overwrite the existing file
Type apt-get update to fetch package lists from the sources we just added
Type apt-get install deb-multimedia-keyring to install the public keys for the Deb Multimedia repository
Type apt-get install openmediavault-keyring to install the public keys for the OpenMediaVault repository
Type y if you're asked if you want to install the packages without verification
Installing Postfix
Before OpenMediaVault can be installed you need postfix, otherwise OMV installation won't run
Type apt-get install postfix
Press Y when asked if you want to continue
When asked what kind of configuration you need, I choose No configuration but you can use another setting if you prefer
Postfix is now installed
Install OpenMediaVault
Type apt-get install openmediavault
Press Y when asked if you want to continue

Press 'y' when asked if you want to install these packages without verification
Wait a while as openmediavault installs
The following settings are for a quick setup, but you can change any of them if necessary
On Configuring mdadm just go on OK to continue
On Configuring scponly choose No
On ProFTPd configuration choose standalone
On Configuring tftpd-hpa leave the default setting and go on Ok
On the Samba Server setting leave WORKGROUP.
Once installation finishes, type: reboot to restart your microserver
At this point you'll lose the ability to SSH to your server, but that's a quick fix:
On any machine connected to your network, go to http://openmediavault.local
Login with the default logins. Username: admin Password: openmediavault
In the left navigation, under Services, select SSH.
Enable it at the top, then press OK to Save
SSH should now be working again
Post Installation
Now that you've got OpenMediaVault running, there's still a couple of stages left before it'll work like a standalone installation. A lot of OpenMediaVaults' power lies in the fact that you can install plugins, so next we'll make sure that our OpenMediaVault installation allows us to install plugins properly.
Enable Plugin Installation
From a machine on your network do the following:
Go to the OMV plugins package directory on a web browser
Find the latest version of the package ending with x.x.x_all.deb e.g. openmediavault-omvpluginsorg_0.3.4_all.deb
Copy the location of this package to your clipboard (in Chrome you'd right click the link and Copy Link Address)
Connect to your microserver via SSH
Type wget <package_url_here> (replace <package_url_here>, including the < and > with the URL you just copied to your clipboard)
E.g.

wget http://packages.omv-plugins.org/pool/main/o/openmediavault-omvpluginsorg/openmediavault-omvpluginsorg_0.3.4_all.deb

This will download the plugins package to your microserver

Type dpkg -i <package_name_here>. Replace <package_name_here> including the < and > with the name of the package you just downloaded.
E.g.

dpkg -i openmediavault-omvpluginsorg_0.3.4_all.deb

This will install the package we just downloaded
Once installed we can delete the package file, so type: rm <package_name_here>
E.g.

rm openmediavault-omvpluginsorg_0.3.4_all.deb

Alternatively…
If you don't have access to a computer, or don't have SSH setup then for now you can use this URL as the package URL and run the commands above on the microserver itself

http://packages.omv-plugins.org/pool/main/o/openmediavault-omvpluginsorg/openmediavault-omvpluginsorg_0.3.4_all.deb

Where Next

Now that you have OpenMediaVault installed, you probably want to have a look the OpenMediaVault configuration guide to help you get started with OMV
